Organizational Context and Scope
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and under the direct supervision of the Head of Programme Support Unit, and in close coordination with the Communication Lead, a, the Communication Assistant will provide support to the communication, visibility, and information management activities of IOM Mozambique.
The IOM Country Office in Mozambique implements programmes across a wide range of thematic areas, including humanitarian response, community stabilization, peacebuilding, health, migration management, disaster preparedness and response, labour mobility, and protection and assistance to vulnerable migrants and displaced populations.
The Communication Assistant will contribute to day-to-day communication and visibility tasks, ensuring effective internal and external information flows, supporting the development of communication materials, and promoting IOM Mozambique’s activities and achievements in line with donor visibility requirements and IOM communication standards.
Responsibilities
- Collect and organize media and social media content relevant to the work of the Country Office; assist in making basic updates of the Office’s social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, X (formerly known as twitter), Facebook), as instructed.
- Assist in formatting and organizing communication materials, including website articles, press releases, social media posts, prepared by the supervisor or other team members.
- Draft and format simple documents including information sheets, presentation slides, and internal and external communication materials, based on available templates and under guidance.
- Assist programme teams in formatting visibility materials and documents according to donor visibility templates or guidelines, when provided.
- Receive and redirect incoming media and communication-related requests inquiries to the relevant focal points within the team.
- Monitor and record references to IOM in the local and international media, as well as social media platforms; compile basic summaries for internal reference.
- As guided by the supervisor, support the team in maintaining internal communication channels by sharing updates, announcements, or relevant documents.
- Respond to general information requests and inquiries; set up and maintain files/records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
- High School diploma with three (3) years of relevant experience; or,
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, social science, international relations, migration studies or related field from an accredited academic institution with one (1) year of relevant professional experience.
Experience
- Demonstrated initial working experience or internship in communications, project management support, reporting, or monitoring.
- Experience in organizing and supporting trainings is considered an asset.
- Experience in working directly with migrants is considered an asset.
- Work experience in the private sector is considered an advantage.
- Work experience or internship in the field of migrant assistance, migrant integration or journalism is considered an asset.
Skills
- In depth knowledge of the broad range of communications, project management support, reporting, or monitoring.
- Knowledge of UN and bilateral donor programming.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, articulate correspondence and communicate well (written and oral) both in English and Portuguese.
Languages
All IOM staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM’s official languages (English, French, Spanish).
For this position, fluency in English and Portuguese is required (oral and written).
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
